NOW IT’S OVER
The 2008 season finally came to a close at Concord on Sunday with the Colts Grand Finals.
If you “hang” around football for decades as many of us have and will continue to do so you will experience many marvelous moments.
I don’t think I’ve seen a more “ gutsy” performance than that which our 1st and 2nd Colts put out on Sunday.
Up against two very multi talented University teams, Easts players put in performances of great courage, enthusiasm, and not least skill.
2nd Colts prepared meticulously for the final…a team taking into the final a miserly defensive record! A tight result with an inevitable outcome and so it proved to be.
The game was close for long periods with both sides striving for attacking penetration. The forward battle was intense and at times fierce.
Universities line-out catch and drive was impressive and this eventually proved to be Easts undoing. Energy sapping forward drives gave Uni good field position, from which they scored the all important first score mid way through the second period.
Uni going on to win the game….16 points to 9.
2nd Colts will look back on a season of increasing momentum with a place in the Grand Final a fitting reward.
Losing dressing rooms are tough places for coaches but Falk and McCausland can look back on the season with great pride. A group of young men have developed into a good team and served the club well. All will be wiser for the experience and back for more next year.
1st Colts have played a level of football this season which has been at times both exhilarating and rewarding. Capable of “ matching’ it up front with all, and bewitching opposition back lines with some of the most creative and expansive back play you will see, 1st Colts have had a tremendous season.
Sundays performance against a talented and well recruited Uni side was filled with endeavour, passion and high level skill.
Easts penetration out wide, with an exciting back-line was a delight to watch. Players strained every sinew to create a flow of possession so necessary if you are to defeat a well organized university defence.
Time in possession and a massive defensive effort proved too heavy a workload for Easts.
In a game of high intensity, Easts were further weakened by two 10min sin binnings for technical offences.
Uni running out winners with a late final flurry of scores to win 39 to 5.
So the season is over for all involved at Easts.
The Wallaroos getting 3 teams into grand finals, our 3 Colts teams made the finals series with 1st and 2nds Colts making the Grand Final and 3 of our 4 grade sides made major semi-finals with 2nd grade finishing Minor Premiers.
My lasting memory……from the 1st Colts final, seeing a player lead from the front, play with both a high level of skill, passion and total commitment, and run himself almost to a standstill in pursuit of success. Then on the presentation dais, stand with calm assurance and dignity, congratulate the opposition and thank his fellow players and coaches for a great effort.
Easts have players of this calibre coming through !! The future is indeed a rosy one………and just in case you’re wondering, Pre-season starts 2nd week in January, the season proper, end of March/April and the Grand final late September.
Hope to see you all there……….
Stay happy

EASTS FLOODLIGHTS APPEAL
Easts Rugby Club has begun an appeal for the upgrading of the lights on Woollahra Oval.
Making the future brighter for players, coaches, supporters, juniors, and the community.*
With the end of the tax year upon us, and the big home game against Randwick last Saturday, Easts has launched the 2008 Floodlights Appeal.
Our current lighting is in need of upgrade to meet modern safety standards, and to make a better experience for all. The economics of club rugby are such that the club needs assistance to meet its aim of providing the opportunity for our young to participate in team sport. To this end we have registered the Floodlights Appeal with the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) allowing donations made to the ASF in support of the project to be tax deductible.
Donation forms are available at the club and via the web-site( form in resource Library). We will recognise any donations in excess of $500 with the donor's name in the annual report and on the base of the floodlights themselves.
Your support is most appreciated by all at Easts Rugby Club now and in the future.
*subject to appropriate council approvals.
