NEW AWARD FOR YALUMBA
Yalumba leads the New World of Wine
Australia’s oldest family-owned winery named New World Winery of the Year
In a timely coincidence with Australia Day, Yalumba has cemented Australia’s position at the forefront of New World winemaking by being honoured as Wine Enthusiast (US) magazine’s New World Winery of the Year.
Currently visiting the US market, Robert Hill Smith was able to accept the award on behalf of Yalumba at the magazine’s Wine Star Awards evening, held at the New York Public Library, New York City – January 25, 2010.
Before boarding the plane Robert said “After the spate of negative news stories around Australian wine in recent times, this is an opportunity for me to acknowledge that Australia is indeed leading the New World of winemaking. For Yalumba, this recognition follows a stellar year in all senses and appropriately celebrates our 160th year as Australia’s oldest family owned winery.”
Now in its 10th year, the Wine Star Awards acknowledges excellence across all areas of the international wine and spirits industry. For 2009 there were 50 nominees with five companies in each of the ten award categories. Winners were selected for their outstanding contribution to the world of wine and spirits.
“Yalumba has become one of the country’s most progressive and successful wine producers”, announced Wine Enthusiast. “For their forward-thinking, innovative leadership in the Australian wine industry and an unflagging commitment to quality and family ownership, Yalumba is Wine Enthusiast’s New World Winery of the Year.”
Other wineries nominated in the New World Winery category, were d'Arenberg (Australia), Bodega Catena Zapata (Argentina), Jackson-Triggs Vintners (Canada), and Vina San Pedro -VSPT (Chile).
Safe travels Robert, and congratulations to each and every member of the extended “Yalumba family”.
NEW DIRECTION FOR EASTS WITH APPOINTMENT OF NEW
COACHING LINE-UP
The Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club today announces the appointment of its First Grade coaching line up for 2010.
The club has appointed Lachlan Fear as Head Coach for the season 2010. Lachlan Fear will be supported by ex Wallaby Tim Wallace as well as former Wallaby, Wallaby assistant coach and Australian sevens coach Glen Ella.
Lachlan Fear, who previously played at the club, has accepted the full time Head Coach role and will take up the post effective immediately. Fear has forged a strong reputation as one of the countries leading young coaches, having been most recently head coach of the Gordon Rugby Club and assistant coach for the Central Coast Rays who won the inaugural ARC competition in 2007. Fear said “I’m delighted to be part of the team and am looking forward to working with the players and the rest of the staff at the club in fulfilling the team’s potential”.
As Head Coach, Fear will be supported by Tim Wallace the former NSW and Wallaby fly half (and Australian Schoolboys coach for the past two seasons) in an exciting coaching combination. Wallace, who played two tests for the Wallabies in 1994 said “Easts are a club looking to improve, with a vision. I am excited about being part of their future and seeing them become more successful”.
Perhaps the biggest name on the coaching roster at Easts is the introduction of Glen Ella to the club. Glen has an illustrious career first as a Wallaby and subsequently as a highly respected coach who has been assistant Wallaby coach on two occasions as well as the Australian sevens coach three times. Glen will take up the role of Technical Advisor to the coaching staff at Easts. Glen remarked “I look forward to an exciting year with the “Beasties” as we have a very professional staff that demands results”.
Vice President of Rugby, Stuart Hudson, commented “Easts Rugby Club are extremely excited to have secured, what we believe, to be one of the best coaching teams in club rugby in Australia. We have been negotiating with Lachlan in recent weeks and are delighted to announce his appointment along with Tim and Glen.
“We feel that this sends a strong signal that Easts will be a force as a club this year and underlines our commitment to our players, members and sponsors to providing the best quality coaching staff”.

EASTS FLOODLIGHTS APPEAL
Our current lighting is in need of upgrade to meet modern safety standards, and to make a better experience for all. The economics of club rugby are such that the club needs assistance to meet its aim of providing the opportunity for our young to participate in team sport. To this end we have registered the Floodlights Appeal with the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) allowing donations made to the ASF in support of the project to be tax deductible.
Donation forms are available at the club and via the web-site (form available here). We will recognise any donations in excess of $500 with the donor's name in the annual report and on the base of the floodlights themselves.
Your support is most appreciated by all at Easts Rugby Club now and in the future.
